A vitamin is an organic molecule which is an important micronutrient for the correct functioning of its metabolism that an organism requires in tiny amounts. Essential nutrients in the organism can not be synthesized, either in adequate amounts or at all, and must therefore be acquired through the diet. Some species can synthesize vitamin C, but not others; in the first instance, it is not a vitamin, but in the second.
